Looking Like Christmas
Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Soon the bells will start
And the thing that will make them ring.
Is the carol that you sing
Right within your heart
Across the land, at schools and churches, children’s Christmas plays and pageants are being performed to the delight of proud parents and relatives. Yeah, sometimes they get a little confused on the lyrics, but little voices singing Christmas carols have a way of bringing a lump to the throat of even the most hardened Scrooge. Here’s two cuties who sang to Jesus last night at my church. (Click on photo to enlarge.)
I shot this hand-held (steadied on the back of a pew) at ISO 1600. Exposure was 1/13 second at f6.3, and my zoom was racked out to its full 360mm. My camera has image stabilization, but in these conditions there’s only so much IS can do. It’s not tack sharp, but at 1/13 second hand-held, not too shabby. Flash? Nope. I don’t like to use flash at events like this - I think it’s such a distraction to performers and audience alike, and often it’s hard to get within flash range of the stage. I think you can get better results without flash if you shoot at a high enough ISO, and try to steady your camera on something solid as you shoot.
