The Mother of Invention

I saw this contraption leaning against the side of a barn. I have no idea what it is or what it does, but it didn’t look like something purchased from the local John Deere dealer. Whatever it is, it appeared to be cobbled together from spare parts and scrap pieces of steel. Perhaps the farmer needed a way to get something done around the farm, and just put something together himself to do it. It seems like another example of good ol’ American ingenuity solving another problem. I hope our country never loses that.

This photo was made in strong, contrasty, mid morning sunlight. As I find myself doing more often, I decided not to try to overcome the contrast with software, but live with it, and even emphasize it. I finally ended up using a simulated lith print technique that took advantage of the original image’s high contrast. (Click on photo to enlarge.) Sometimes it’s better not to fight your photos, but just go with the flow.

Inspirational

I spend a good deal of time (to be honest, too much time) looking at the work of other photographers on the web. I see many good photographs, but it’s rare that I come across a site that I find truly “inspirational”. I discovered one such site yesterday containing the work of Seattle photographer Wilson Tsoi. Check out his site, and see if you’re not inspired too:
