The Pic-Nic Flag
Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
On the way back from driving my daughter back to college, I saw this back-lit American flag which had tangled itself around its pole. I thought the back lighting caused an interesting pattern. It reminded me of a checkerboard table cloth, like one might put on a pic-nic table. Even though I was in a hurry to get home, I felt I couldn’t pass this one up. So I made a U-turn, and went back to photograph it. From the front-lit side, it was just a tangled flag. From the back-lit side, I thought it was something special. (Click on photo to enlarge.)
The flag was in front of a RV dealer which had just closed for the day. As I was aiming my camera up at the flag, the owner of the business was leaving. I got the usual funny look we shutterbugs often get. I knew he must be thinking, “Why is this nut taking pictures of my tangled flag?” Of course, it’s a photography thing, he probably wouldn’t understand, so I just ignored him and kept on shooting.
