How I got my PhD in the “How-To-Business” of Photography

Submitted by Craig Photography Blog
***New series every Monday for the next 5 weeks*** Part 2 of 5
read part 1 (HERE)
(without getting into debt or going to school and how you can do it to)
The next ten years I would rise in the rank of working crazy nonstop hours. Opportunities to teach, hire and fire [...]

1014 - World Of Two

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

The good thing is, I’ll be going to sleep pretty soon. The bad thing is, well, you know it, another short post.
I guess I’d have had another one or two usable images, but really, I’m just short of sleeping in front of the computer, and if at [...]

1013 - I’ll Be Your Mirror

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

The good thing is, I have slept long and well. The bad thing is, that I have no time to write a longish post now
The Song of the Day is “I’ll Be Your Mirror“, originally from the Velvet Underground’s banana album. I have it on [...]

2009 Orange County Fair Awards

Submitted by Ralph Nordstrom Photography Blog
I was fortunate enough to have all three photographs accepted for the Orange County Fair this year.  And I was very surprised to learn that all three had won awards.  To today I finally made it out to the fair and sure enough they all had ribbons.
Death Valley Reflections had [...]

It’s Folkmoot Time!

Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
What is Folkmoot? From the Folkmoot website:
“Folkmoot USA, North Carolina’s Official International Festival, is a two-week celebration of the world’s cultural heritage through folk music and dance. Held each summer across the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, Folkmoot features performances, parades and workshops by more than 350 performers from a [...]

Downspout With Vines

Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
A while back I found a technique for a simulated selenium/copper look in Photoshop (or other image editor), so I decided to give it a try on this photo. This effect looked better on the example in the book, so maybe it’s a more subject dependent technique. I’m just lukewarm on [...]

Recap – Purposeful Blogging Workshop

Submitted by Craig Photography Blog
I would like to publicly use this blog as an open letter to the participants who attended my workshop at Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh.
First let me apologize; I didn’t get the opportunity to thank you and say goodbye properly at the completion of the workshop. The workshop [...]

1012 - In Memoriam

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

Don’t ask me what this is. It seems to be a shrine to the memory of some young man.
You find it on the streets of Vienna, near the heart of the 7th district, in a corner right to some esoterics shop. Really, I have no idea, [...]

1011 - The Naked Eye

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

These are the images of Monday. I was back in Vienna and Vienna behaved: it was sunny and hot.
Remember that stupidly big battery from “990 - Oh Yes, Take Another Guess“? Guess what, it’s still here, and these are the cables that run from it down [...]

Eastern Sierra Workshop - Mt Whitney First Light

Submitted by Ralph Nordstrom Photography Blog
First the alpenglow transforms the towering granite into soft contours and delicate shades.  Then the first rays of the sun transmute the ethereal rock into bright, chiseled gold.  Look quickly or you will miss it.

Eastern Sierra Workshop - Mt Whitney

Submitted by Ralph Nordstrom Photography Blog
Mt Whitney is the grandest and tallest peak in the Sierra Nevada and the lower 48.  At 14,497 feet it’s a challenge to climb, even if there is a trail that takes you to the top.  I recall the first time I climbed it at the age of 14.  It [...]

Median Filter - Smoothen Skin in Photoshop

Submitted by Photoplus Tutorials Blog
Sometimes the skin shows up as rough in a photograph. The best to smoothen rough skin in Photoshop is to use the Median Filter which does not blur out edges.
Here is a free stock image that I have opened in Photoshop.

A closeup showing the rough skin smoothened in Photoshop.
The tutorial [...]

Yet More On Megapixels and Diffraction

Submitted by Howard Grill Blog
In my last post, I referenced a series of articles on the Luminous Landscape (here and here) which supplemented an even earlier post I had written about an article in Photo Techniques about the effects of diffraction when using sensors with high pixel densities.
In the comments section to yesterday’s post, it [...]

American Iron

Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
I found this 1957 Chevy Bel Air parked in downtown Clyde, NC. My parents had one of these when they got married, and they went on their honeymoon in it. It was the car I came home from the hospital in after being born. I have only faint memories of it [...]

1010 - Sunday

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

It’s late, much too late to say many words. I’m in Vienna again and tired now, and by the way, did I mention it’s late?
I took this image in the maybe two minutes that I had for photography today. It’s a combination of two exposures, one at [...]

1009 - In A Country Churchyard

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

Saturday began with rain. Much rain.
Again there were floods in parts of Austria, and the air cooled down by about 15 degrees Celsius. High mountain roads above 1500 meters were impassable without snow chains, in other words, it was a rather unusual high summer weekend.
In the [...]

Eastern Sierra Workshop - Photographing Mt Williamson

Submitted by Ralph Nordstrom Photography Blog
We were heading up to Onion Valley out of Independence, CA.  But the morning light on Mt Williamson was so fantastic we had to take a detour and stop there first.

Photographing Mt Williamson

And here’s what I came up with.

Mt Williamson

Or this - take your pick.

Any way you look at [...]

A Little Appreciation

Submitted by My Viewfinder Blog
Quirky signs, mis-spelled signs, or signs that don’t seem to communicate exactly what the sign maker probably intended always catch my eye. It’s one of the reasons I like to have a camera with me at all times, because I never know when I will come across a quirky sign.
While making [...]

How I got my PhD in “How-To-Business” of Photography

Submitted by Craig Photography Blog

In fall of 1991 I became a professional photographer…sort off. This all came about because of the frustration and annoyance with my current position, which was working for a small company writing ads. I created ads & brochures for a small company that quickly placed me in the sales [...]

1008 - Morning Glory

Submitted by The Daily Photography of Andreas Manessinger Blog

It’s already Sunday and I’m so much behind. Sorry for that, I ran pretty out of time. That’s for quiet weekends
This image was taken Friday morning on my way to work. I actually thought all the time I would take another image, one of the [...]
